Korenani / Last updated 25 September 2026
This app exists to explain Korean you can't read, right where you meet it.
To do that we keep only what is needed, and collect nothing else.
What we do not ask for
We do not ask for your postal address, phone number, date of birth or gender when you create an account. Information you choose to enter in a question or feedback may still contain these details.
There are no ads, so there is no ad tracking.
There are no analytics tools.
We do not use the microphone.
Photos
Text in a photo you take or choose is read on your device first (Apple's text recognition on iPhone, Google ML Kit on Android). Nothing leaves your phone at that point.
If your device cannot read enough text or the recognition result has low confidence, the whole photo is sent through our server to Google's AI (Gemini) for another reading, even if some text was recognised. The photo itself is not stored on our server; the recognised text and cache details are stored so the same photo does not need to be read twice.
While processing a photo, the app may create a JPEG copy in your device's temporary folder. Your notes can keep the file path and show the photo again while that file remains. The device may clear temporary files, and the app does not automatically add photos to your album.
The Korean you ask about
To write an explanation, the Korean sentence is sent through our server to Google's AI (Gemini).
The explanation we get back is stored on our server and reused for other people.
That is how the same sentence is never bought twice, and it is what keeps the price low.
Shared explanation data may contain the original sentence and explanation, or a request hash and cached generated response. It does not include the account ID of the person who asked.
The app does not distinguish text read from a photo from text you typed or pasted.
If you type something personal, it may appear in a stored explanation and be reused for other people. Please do not enter anything you would not want kept.
Audio (Listen)
When you tap Listen, the Korean sentence is sent through our server to Google's AI (Gemini) to produce spoken audio. We never record your voice — the microphone is not used.
The audio we make is kept on your device only, so the same sentence is not made twice. Audio is not stored on our server.
Your notes
Notes are stored on your device only. They are never sent to our server.
That also means they disappear if you delete the app.
If you have device backup turned on (iCloud or Google Backup), your notes may move to a new phone through that backup. This does not go through our server either — it is Apple's or Google's backup doing it.
Your account (optional)
Registration and sign-in are optional. You can purchase credits without registering. In that case, the app creates a random anonymous user ID, without an email address or name, to securely connect the receipt and remaining credits. Linking an account lets you access purchased credits with the same login after changing devices.
- You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password.
- If you use a password, Supabase stores a password hash for authentication. We do not store or see the original password.
- Account data can include an email address and provider identifier supplied through email, Apple or Google sign-in, plus the nickname you chose.
- Your nickname is shown only on your own screen. There is no leaderboard or any public place where other people can see it.
Payment
What you can buy in the app is credits — the number of times you can ask the AI something new. It is not a monthly subscription.
- Payment is handled by the App Store or Google Play, depending on your device. Card numbers and other payment details never reach us.
- At purchase, the app sends the anonymous user ID or account ID to the App Store or Google Play as a purchase-account identifier. To verify the purchase, it sends the Apple-signed transaction or Google Play purchase token to our server. The server checks both the purchase-account identifier and the transaction before granting credits. The raw Google purchase token is not stored in our purchase ledger; a hash is used to identify repeat transactions.
- Our purchase ledger stores an anonymous user ID or account ID, transaction identifier, product, credits granted, purchase environment and time. Your remaining credit balance is stored separately.
- The free credits (the ones you get on install and each month) live on your device and are not sent to our server.
- Refunds are handled by the App Store or Google Play where you made the purchase. We cannot process them.
Feedback and bug reports
If you send feedback from the app, Supabase stores the message, your contact details only if you enter them, and the app version, platform (such as iOS or Android) and language code needed to investigate it. If you are signed in, the record also includes your account ID so we can connect the report to your account. Your notes are not sent automatically, but anything you put in the message is sent.
We retain feedback to respond and improve the service. The shared explanation cache does not add your account ID, but a sentence you enter may itself contain personal information and may be reused. Please do not enter sensitive personal details.
Third-party services we use
- Google (Gemini API) — receives the Korean sentence (and any photo your device could not read well enough) to produce explanations, text recognition and audio.
- Supabase — our server and database. The storage described above happens here.
- Apple / Google — sign-in and payment.
How long we keep things
Explanations and recognised text are kept indefinitely so the same sentence is never bought twice (they carry no record of who asked).
Your Korenani account details and credit balance are kept until you delete your Korenani data. On deletion, a purchase record without your account ID (transaction identifier, product, credits, environment and purchase time) is retained for five years from the purchase date.
Feedback remains after account deletion, but its account ID is removed. Any contact details or personal information you entered in the message can remain until you ask us to review removal.
Audio lives on your device only, so we keep it for no time at all.
How to delete your data
In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete guest purchase data, or use Delete Korenani account after signing in. This removes the anonymous user ID or Korenani account data and remaining credits. If the last shared account uses Sign in with Apple, the app asks you to authorize with Apple again and revokes that authorization before deleting the account. If your login is also used by another Jieum Studio app, that shared login account and Apple authorization remain for the other app. If deletion fails, contact us below.
Your purchase record is retained without an account ID for five years from purchase. Feedback is not automatically deleted; its account ID is removed, but the message and any contact details you entered remain. Contact us below to request removal of feedback.
Remaining credits are lost when you delete your Korenani data. Deletion does not automatically request a refund; refund requests are handled by the App Store or Google Play.
Notes are on your device only, so deleting the app deletes them.
Shared explanations and recognised text are not indexed by account. If you want us to review removal of text you submitted, contact us below with the text; an account ID alone may not be enough to locate it. You can also request removal of feedback you sent.
